The Smart Money Report  May 2026 · No. 02

The Month The Billionaires Went Shopping

A Gates vehicle, a Japanese banking giant, and a cable legend all wrote big open-market checks in May. When money this patient moves, it's worth knowing where.

Everything below is a real Form 4 — the filing the SEC forces on insiders and big holders within two business days of a purchase. These are the largest and most telling buys of the month, and what each one might be signaling.

The Marquee Buy

Bill Gates's Cascade Piles Into Republic Services

$RSG · Republic Services  |  ~$120M+ across mid-May @ ~$197–$208  |  CASCADE INVESTMENT · 10% owner · MAY 11–14

Cascade — the investment vehicle tied to Bill Gates — spent more than $120 million adding to Republic Services over four straight sessions in the middle of May, paying up from $197 all the way to $208 a share. Nobody buys a garbage-and-recycling stock for the thrill. They buy it because it's a toll booth on something that never stops.

Why it matters: the most patient money in the world buying a boring compounder on strength — not weakness — is a statement about the next decade, not the next quarter. Cascade paying higher prices each day is the opposite of bargain-hunting.

What to watch: whether the buying continues above $208. Smart money that keeps paying up is telling you it sees a number well north of today.

The Strategic Stake

A Japanese Banking Giant Backs Jefferies

$JEF · Jefferies Financial  |  ~$660M across two tranches @ $48–$55  |  SUMITOMO MITSUI FINANCIAL GROUP · director · MAY 1

On the first day of the month, Sumitomo Mitsui — one of Japan's largest financial groups — put roughly $660 million into Jefferies. This is the deepening of a long alliance between the two firms, and a stake that size buys influence, not just exposure.

Why it matters: when a strategic partner with a board seat writes a nine-figure check, it's underwriting the whole business, not renting the stock. That's the most durable kind of buyer there is.

What to watch: this stake reappears later in the year — a partner that keeps adding is the strongest tell in the book. (Spoiler: they were back in July.)

The Legend

John Malone Adds $106 Million To Liberty Latin America

$LILA · Liberty Latin America  |  12,345,404 shares @ $8.63 ≈ $106M  |  JOHN C. MALONE · MAY 22

The cable-and-telecom dealmaker who built an empire out of unloved infrastructure added $106 million to a beaten-down name most investors had written off. Malone buying his own single-digit stock in that kind of size is exactly the contrarian move that made his reputation.

Why it matters: a legendary operator adding nine figures to a stock trading under $9 is a bet on the assets, not the sentiment. When the person who knows the business best is buying the fear, it's worth a look.

What to watch: Malone's cost basis near $8.63. It becomes the line the market watches to see if the smart money is right.

The One To Remember

A Robinhood Director Starts Buying

$HOOD · Robinhood Markets  |  249,000 shares @ $80.39 ≈ $20M  |  MEYER MALKA · director · MAY 28

Late in May, a Robinhood board member bought $20 million of stock on the open market. On its own, a big single buy. But hold onto this name — it becomes the story of June.

Why it matters: a single insider buy is data. The same insider buying again the next month is a pattern — and patterns are what the tape rewards.

The Read

What May Was Telling You

May's checks all came from money that doesn't need to be right this quarter — a Gates vehicle, a strategic bank, a billionaire operator. When that kind of buyer is paying up rather than waiting for a dip, it usually means they've stopped worrying about the entry and started worrying about missing it.

None of this is a recommendation, and no filing ever plays out exactly the way it looks on paper, so do your own homework and run your own plan. But when the patient money moves first, the impatient money tends to follow.

The crowd trades the headline. The smart money buys what the headline needs.
