The Smart Money Report  June 2026 · No. 03

When Insiders Buy Their Own Fear

June was the month the people who run the companies started writing personal checks — a $100 million cluster, a director who won't stop, and a CEO buying his own boats.

Everything below is a real Form 4 — the filing the SEC forces on insiders and big holders within two business days of a purchase. These are the largest and most telling buys of the month, and what each one might be signaling.

The Marquee Buy

Robert Duggan Doubles Down On Summit — With A Partner

$SMMT · Summit Therapeutics  |  3,810,000 shares @ $13.12 ≈ $50M — twice  |  ROBERT DUGGAN + MAHKAM ZANGANEH · JUN 12

On the same day, at the same price, two of Summit's top insiders each bought $50 million of stock — a combined $100 million cluster in a single session. Duggan is the operator who turned a small drug company into one of the great biotech wins of the last decade, and this is him putting nine figures back on the table.

Why it matters: two insiders buying the identical block on the identical day isn't coincidence, it's coordination and conviction. When the people with the clinical data buy the fear in this size, the market pays attention.

What to watch: the $13.12 cost basis. It's the number both buyers are now defending, and the line the tape will test.

The Pattern

The Robinhood Director Still Won't Stop

$HOOD · Robinhood Markets  |  $35M+ across June @ ~$80–$83  |  MEYER MALKA · director · JUNE

Remember the Robinhood board member from May? He was back. Across early June he added more than $35 million on the open market, paying up into the low $80s — pushing his two-month total north of $55 million.

Why it matters: one buy is data, two months of buying is a pattern, and paying higher prices the second month is the loudest version of it. An insider adding on strength is telling you he thinks it's still cheap.

What to watch: a third month. A director who keeps stepping up is the single cleanest tell on this list.

The Operator

A Tanker CEO Buys His Own Boats

$STNG · Scorpio Tankers  |  234,637 shares @ $77.50 ≈ $18.2M  |  EMANUELE LAURO · CEO · JUN 22

The chief executive of one of the world's biggest product-tanker fleets put $18 million of his own money into his own stock. Shipping is a business where the person running the fleet can see the charter rates before anyone else does, and he liked what he saw.

Why it matters: a CEO buying in a cyclical business is often the best-informed bet on the whole tape — he knows the day rates, the order book, and the supply picture before the market prices them.

What to watch: shipping rates. If they hold or climb, the CEO's June buy looks early rather than lucky.

The Activist

Edward Garden Steps Into Fortune Brands

$FBIN · Fortune Brands Innovations  |  320,067 shares @ $40.60 ≈ $13M  |  EDWARD P. GARDEN · director · JUN 10

Garden — a co-founder of the activist firm Trian — added $13 million to Fortune Brands. When an activist-minded director buys in size, it's rarely passive; it's a stake he intends to have a say over.

Why it matters: activist buyers don't just want the stock to go up, they push to make it happen. A director with that background adding shares is a bet on change, not just on the current plan.

What to watch: any follow-on filings or board noise. Activist money tends to get louder over time, not quieter.

The Read

What June Was Telling You

May was billionaires and funds. June was operators — the people who actually run the businesses, buying their own stock with their own money. That's a different kind of signal, because an insider is betting on information the rest of us won't see for months.

None of this is a recommendation, and no filing ever plays out exactly the way it looks on paper, so do your own homework and run your own plan. But when the people closest to the numbers keep buying, it's worth asking what they see.

Nobody buys their own fear unless they know something the fear doesn't.
